The Study That Started It
In 1999, researchers published a study in the journal Nature looking at children who slept with various lighting conditions before age two. The numbers were striking: children who slept in full darkness had a 10% rate of myopia (nearsightedness) later in childhood, compared to 34% for children who slept with a night light, and 55% for children who slept with a full room light on.
The study made headlines everywhere. It was picked up by major news outlets, and the takeaway stuck: leave a light on in your baby's room, and you might be setting them up for bad eyesight down the road.
The Correction Nobody Heard About
A year later, two separate research teams tried to confirm the finding. Neither could.
What they found instead was a confound hiding in plain sight: parents who are nearsighted themselves were simply more likely to leave a light on in their child's room, and more likely to have nearsighted children, for genetic reasons that have nothing to do with the light itself. The light and the eyesight were both downstream of the parents' own vision, not cause and effect.

This is a fairly ordinary story in how science works. An early study finds something striking, it gets attention, and later research narrows or corrects it. The problem is that corrections almost never travel as far as the original headline. The 1999 finding is still repeated on parenting sites today. The 2000 correction, much less so.
So What Actually Matters?
Even though the eyesight connection didn't hold up, there's a separate and genuinely well-supported finding: light exposure at night affects kids' melatonin production, and by extension their sleep.
Research on this is fairly consistent: children's melatonin suppression in response to light is stronger than adults', and the color temperature of the light matters quite a bit. Cooler, blue-toned light suppresses melatonin more than warmer, amber-toned light does. This isn't about eyesight, it's about sleep quality and how easily a child settles at night.
So the real, current-best advice isn't "use a night light" or "don't use a night light." It's about what kind.
What to Look For in a Night Light
Warm-toned light, not blue-white.
Amber or soft yellow light has a much smaller effect on melatonin than cool white or blue-tinted LED light.
Dim over bright.
The dimmer the light, the less it interferes with the body's natural signal that it's nighttime.
Adjustable, if possible.
A night light with brightness or color adjustment lets you dial in the lowest level that still does the job.
