Your baby will go through somewhere around 6,000 diaper changes before they are potty trained. That is 6,000 times something is pressed against the most sensitive skin on their body, soaking up moisture and sitting there for hours.

When my son Levi got a stubborn rash at three months, I learned the hard way that "hypoallergenic" on the front of a package does not mean much. The diapers we trusted were fragranced, lotioned, and chlorine bleached. None of that was obvious from the box.

So we built the Clean Baby Index. It is our running ranking of the brands in a category, scored on what actually matters for your baby, not on what sells best or markets hardest. This is the diaper edition.

What We Look For

Every diaper is judged against the same checklist. Here is exactly what earns a spot near the top and what sends a brand to the bottom.

Green flags

  • Cotton or plant-based inner liner. Cotton is the gold standard for the layer that touches skin all day.
  • Totally chlorine-free processing. No chlorine bleaching, which can leave behind trace dioxins.
  • Fragrance-free and lotion-free. Babies do not need their diaper to smell like lavender. Added scent and lotion are common irritants.
  • Third-party certifications. OEKO-TEX, EWG Verified, and similar testing that screens for hundreds of harmful substances.
  • Transparent sourcing. If a brand tells you where materials come from and how they are processed, that is a very good sign.

Red flags

  • Synthetic fragrance. One of the most common causes of diaper rash, and it can hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals.
  • Chlorine bleaching. Creates dioxin byproducts. This is what knocked Dyper down despite its clean image.
  • Petroleum-based additives. Petrolatum and mineral oil can trap moisture and irritate more than they soothe.
  • Parabens and phthalates. Endocrine disruptors with no business in a product worn 24 hours a day.
  • Opaque ingredient lists. If a brand will not tell you what is inside, that is the answer.

Why Kudos is number one

Kudos is the only diaper on this list with a 100% cotton inner liner, the part that actually sits against your baby. Almost every other diaper, even the ones marketed as natural, uses a synthetic topsheet. For something pressed against skin for years, that single detail matters more than any marketing claim.

Why Millie Moon sits in the middle

Millie Moon has a devoted following, and we understand why. It is soft, fragrance-free, lotion-free, and latex-free, with OEKO-TEX and Dermatest certifications. But it recently moved from totally chlorine-free processing to elemental chlorine (chlorine dioxide) bleaching, and some parents reported new rashes after the change. It is still a reasonable choice, but that downgrade is why it lands in the Decent tier instead of near the top.

Why Dyper and Kirkland are our two Busts

A Bust is a brand parents trust that does not hold up when you look closely. Dyper markets itself as the clean bamboo choice, but it is chlorine bleached. Kirkland was a beloved budget pick until it changed manufacturers in 2025, and independent lab testing has flagged PFAS indicators in the diaper. Both are brands people assume are safe, which is exactly what makes the gap worth pointing out.

Why Pampers and Huggies are in the Avoid tier

These are the brands in nearly every hospital and on every shelf. Familiar is not the same as clean. Between synthetic fragrance, chlorine processing, and limited transparency, the mainstream giants do not clear the bar we set. Popular does not mean safe.

Then Kyle pointed out that most carriers are made from synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon) that shed microplastics with every wash and can contain flame retardants in the padding. Baby carriers and strollers are in constant contact with your baby's skin for hours every day. Whatever fabric touches them gets absorbed through their skin. Whatever padding is pressed against their face gets inhaled. And whatever materials are used in the frame and components can leach chemicals when exposed to heat, sunlight, and repeated use. After researching dozens of options, we landed on carriers made from GOTS-certified organic cotton with minimal padding and metal hardware. For our stroller, we prioritized an aluminum frame over plastic and avoided anything with excessive foam padding (which almost always contains flame retardants). Many popular brands use synthetic fabrics and thick foam padding, so read materials lists carefully. Stretchy Wraps Made from stretchy knit fabric (usually a cotton-spandex blend). While the cotton can be organic, the spandex is always synthetic (made from polyurethane). These are best for newborns but lose support as baby gets heavier. If you choose a stretchy wrap, look for organic cotton content and minimal synthetic fiber percentage. Stroller Material Considerations Frame Material Aluminum frames are lightweight, durable, and don't contain BPA or phthalates like plastic frames do. Steel frames are heavier but even more durable. Seat Padding Like carrier padding, stroller seat padding is often polyurethane foam treated with flame retardants.
